Through August, Chester Racecourse runs music nights and Chester Pride lands on 15 August. The City Walls, Cathedral and a ChesterBoat cruise suit a slower pace. For cheap days, head to Moonlight Flicks or a Meadows picnic; with kids, the Sandy Lane ferry, Chester Zoo and Family Fun Day (2 August) cover most of the school holidays. The River Dee is the city's main summer asset. The Groves, the Meadows and the Sandy Lane ferry combine into an easy hot-day plan that needs no car. The Groves itself is flat and step-free along its full length, so it works for retirees, prams and wheelchairs alike. The Groves is the promenade on the north bank of the Dee. Walk from the Old Dee Bridge to the Suspension Bridge, then up The Meadows side, in under an hour. Free, no booking, shaded benches and ice-cream stops along the way.
The Sandy Lane ferry crosses to The Meadows on weekends and bank holidays from 23 May 2026 to the last Sunday in September, 10:30am to 4:30pm. A short, novel river crossing that pairs well with a Meadows picnic.
Short half-hour and longer two-hour cruises run from The Groves through the summer. Tickets are sold on the day at the boarding kiosk and online; check the operator timetable on the day of your visit.
The Meadows is the open floodplain on the south bank, reached by the Suspension Bridge or the Sandy Lane ferry. Bring a rug, food from the city, and you have a free riverside afternoon five minutes from the centre.
On 12 July 2026 the Chester Raft Race fills the river with home-built rafts running from the Old Dee Bridge to The Meadows. Spectating is free along The Groves and the Meadows side. Arrive early for a riverside spot.
Cheshire West and Chester runs river safety patrols on Friday to Sunday and bank holidays from April to the end of September. Currents are stronger than they look and the Dee is tidal in the city. Swimming is not advised.
Five family attractions cover most school-holiday days within driving distance. For under-eights, lean on Chester Zoo, the Ice Cream Farm and the Sandy Lane ferry; for older kids and teens, head for Crocky Trail, BeWILDerwood Cheshire and the Llangollen day trip. The zoo opens 10am-5pm from 1 June to 22 July 2026, then extends to 10am-6pm from 23 July to 1 September. Afterglow runs 31 July to 16 August, with last entry pushed back so the site stays open until 8pm.
An outdoor woodland adventure park near Northwich with treehouses, slides and storytelling trails. Best on a dry day; arrive at opening for the quietest run round the site.
An obstacle adventure park on the southern edge of Chester. Expect mud, slides and a giant swing. Bring spare clothes and trainers that you do not mind getting wet.
A working dairy farm near Tattenhall with play areas, ice cream, a sandy beach and farm activities. Free entry to the farm with paid activities and food on top. Handy for a half-day after a morning elsewhere.
Indoor aquarium at Cheshire Oaks with the long underwater tunnel and shark dives. Works year-round but earns its place as a rainy-day backup when the river plan falls through.
The Racecourse runs a Family Fun Day on 2 August 2026 with activities aimed at children alongside the racing. A good way to introduce younger children to the racecourse without committing to a full evening fixture.
Chester's summer evenings sit on three pillars: Storyhouse in Grosvenor Park, Moonlight Flicks and Chester Racecourse music nights. All three usually sell out at peak dates, so book before you plan the rest of a day around them. Storyhouse programmes the Open Air Theatre season from 3 July to 6 September 2026 in Grosvenor Park. Expect rotating productions through the summer, with bring-your-own picnics allowed.
Outdoor cinema runs at the Rooftop Social Club from 14 May to 25 June 2026 and returns to Grosvenor Park from 9 to 31 August. Bring warm layers and a rug; tickets are dated per film.
Headline race-evening fixtures include the Ibiza Classics Evening on 10 July, The Bootleg Beatles on 11 July, Tom Jones with Nile Rodgers and CHIC on 14 August, Ladies Day on 22 August and the Rum and Reggae Festival on 29 August.
Chester Pride takes place on 15 August 2026, with the venue confirmed nearer the date. It anchors a busy mid-August weekend that also overlaps with Zoo Afterglow and Moonlight Flicks.

Chester itself also works in reverse: day-trippers from Manchester reach the city in roughly an hour by train, and from Liverpool in about 45 minutes, so any plan on this page works as a one-day visit. For most people the best summer day combines a Grosvenor Park or Open Air Theatre evening with a daytime walk along The Groves. If you have children, build the day around Chester Zoo, the Sandy Lane ferry and a picnic at The Meadows instead.
Chester Zoo runs 10am to 5pm from 1 June to 22 July, then extends to 10am to 6pm from 23 July to 1 September. Zoo Afterglow keeps the site open until 8pm from 31 July to 16 August, excluding 3 and 10 August. Always check the official opening times on your visit date.
Storyhouse runs the Open Air Theatre season at Grosvenor Park from 3 July to 6 September 2026. Moonlight Flicks open-air cinema returns to the same park from 9 to 31 August. Tickets sell out for popular dates.
Cheshire West and Chester does not recommend swimming in the River Dee - it is tidal in the city and the current is stronger than it looks. Sandy Lane Park has the seasonal aqua park; check the council page for water-quality and opening updates before you go.
The City Walls, Grosvenor Park, The Meadows picnic spots, Roman Gardens, the riverside path along The Groves and spectating the Chester Raft Race on 12 July are all free.
Chester Cathedral, Storyhouse, Grosvenor Museum, the covered Rows and Blue Planet Aquarium at Cheshire Oaks all work as rainy-day fallbacks. Open Air Theatre and Moonlight Flicks publish their wet-weather policy on the ticket page; check before travelling.
This page does not cover beach trips in detail because the nearest beaches are in North Wales and need a longer drive. For a comparable day out without the drive, use the Sandy Lane ferry and The Meadows, or pair Llangollen with Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
